evilvte could not be resized smaller?

Someone asked the question and then deleted his/her comment.

I guess he/she has found the FAQ.

If you are using a tiling window manager, I think evilvte built with GTK+ 3.x will work better with it. GTK+ 3.x based evilvte could be resized smaller.

However, GTK+ 3.x still has problems here and there, see comments of FAQ.

If you want to make your terminal emulator smaller, paste those settings below to your "$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0".

Or use the environment variable GTK2_RC_FILES to assign evilvte-only styling.

世界初！ The trick: gtk2 & gtk3 coexist

GTK+ 2.x and 3.x should be seen as two different libraries.
Of course they are similar, and are source compatible in some level.

Due to the similarity, GTK+ team decided that they can not coexist, and wrote runtime check to make sure that.

There are some tricks and wrappers can do a real "gtk2 & gtk3 coexist", for example you can use a gtk3 web browser and use the gtk2 Adobe flash plugin in it.

Since version 0.5.0, evilvte uses dlopen() to do a "gtk2 & gtk3 coexist".
They do not really coexist in one single window, but you can run one binary to choose gtk2 or gtk3 at runtime like this:

~$ evilvte --2 & evilvte --3 &

Due to the similarity of gtk2 and gtk3, it is quite easy to do the dlopen() trick. I do not think it will be common, but I do hope some others will do the same thing to support two versions of GTK+ at the same time. Maybe not for gtk2 and gtk3, but for gtk3 and gtk4.

I do not think I am the first to do the "choose from 2 libs at runtime", but for gtk2 and gtk3, I think I am really the first in the world. :-P

So I put the Japanese phrase at title, "世界初！", which means "The first in the world!".

IP Transition of evilvte host

All new evilvte tarballs will be xz compressed

I happened to find that xz has an --extreme option.
It often makes files much smaller, even with -0 compression level.
I tested -0 to -9 and -0e to -9e tens of times and found that -0e and -3e often produce the smallest evilvte tarball.
(It is quite different for other data.)

Decompressing a -0e tarball only needs 1 MiB of RAM, and 5 MiB for -3e.
I think any device today will do the job well, so I changed the default compression of evilvte to xz.

Gzipped tarballs will be provided as a fallback.
I have not decided when to stop shipping newly gzipped tarball.

Filesize comparison of evilvte 0.4.9:

xz   -0e 52448 bytes (86% of gzip, 91% of bzip2)

bzip2 -9 57670 bytes (94% of gzip)

gzip  -9 61286 bytes

Useful CSS styling

Default theme of GTK+ 3.x is quite ugly and colorless.

You may embed CSS style in evilvte and get a much clearer tabbar, for example:

Some users reported that vte_terminal_fork_command_full() will make evilvte segfault, especially when zsh is their default shell. [1]

It could be fixed with:
export CFLAGS="-DVTE_FORK_CMD_OLD=1"
and rebuild evilvte.

I will make the option be default in next release of evilvte. :-)

I can not reproduce the bug. :-(

I tested evilvte 0.4.8 and zsh 4.3.11 with various settings.

Everything works as expected.

I suggest you to try these methods:

1. export CFLAGS="-DVTE_FORK_CMD_OLD=1" and rebuild evilvte

1. This will make evilvte to use vte_terminal_fork_command()

1. instead of vte_terminal_fork_command_full()

2. run evilvte with "SHELL" environment variable

2. ~$ SHELL=zsh evilvte &

3. run evilvte with or without "-ls" (login shell)

3. ~$ evilvte -ls &

4. upgrade your libvte

I know roxterm (<= 1.20.6) encountered similar problem.

However since I can not reproduce the bug in evilvte, I have no idea how to apply the diff from roxterm 1.20.7.

Further comments are very welcome.

The setting is now supported in evilvte >= 0.4.9~pre1:

Just assign anything to MENU_CUSTOM, and add "Auto-click".

You will not see the menu when clicking right mouse button.

"Auto-click" works fine with MENU_MATCH_STRING_EXEC.

Right-click menu to "Open" or "Copy" will popup as before, when URL is detected.

Currently there is no way to do that, but I made a quick hack for you.

GTK+ 3.0.0 has been released. It has changed its soname again.

Some compilers do not accept "-Wl,--as-needed" or similar options, so I use a minimal set of linking options, which can not find new soname automatically.

If you want to build current evilvte with GTK+ 3.0.0, please set your LDLIBS environment variable.

For example:
export LDLIBS=`pkg-config --libs vte-2.90`

Thus everything will be fine.

I will fix this problem in next release, of course. :-)

HOTKEY_MIMIC_SCROLL_* with GTK+ 2.91.7

GTK+ 2.91.7 enables XI2 by default.
However, XI2 does not work with XSendEvent currently.

If you want to use HOTKEY_MIMIC_SCROLL_UP or HOTKEY_MIMIC_SCROLL_DOWN with GTK+ 2.91.7,
please add "gdk_disable_multidevice();" without the quote before "gtk_init(&argc, &argv);".

I will fix this problem in next release, of course. :-)

Try this one:

evilvte -e sudo bash

sudo needs user to input password in the terminal, so basically it can not be used in menu system.

Some menu system can call programs within a terminal, but calling evilvte in evilvte is quite stupid. :-)

I have not checked tinycore menu system, maybe they has better solutions then 'evilvte -e sudo bash'.

Update: calno.com has been moved to a new web hosting, so the IP is changed. :-)

evilvte is hosted on calno.com, but the DNS data is temporarily corrupted.

The workaround is adding IP data to your /etc/hosts:

Update: the trick only work for
        GTK+ verson <= 2.91.5

Default inner-border of VTE is 1 pixel.

If you prefer smaller inner-border,
you may paste those below to your
$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0:

There are (at least?) three reasons why this might be so:

1) The parent make didn't realize that the child process it was
invoking was actually a "make" program. In this case, it won't
allow the child to connect to the jobserver. This is typically
because the command to invoke the child uses "make" or similar
rather than the correct $(MAKE). See the docs on the "+" token to
understand the algorithm GNU make uses to determine if the child is
a sub-make or not.

Adding the "+" to the invocation in the parent will fix this; hence
the message you got.

2) You have changed your SHELL to use csh or tcsh. These shells are
fundamentally broken and cannot coexist with the jobserver. You
will need to use a different SHELL, preferable a Bourne-compatible
one (sh, ksh, bash, zsh).

3) There is something about the LSF implementation of GNU make that
breaks this: note that for the jobserver to work correctly each
sub-make _MUST_ be a direct fork/exec of its parent. Running them
on remote systems, invoking them from servers, etc. will not work.

I think it is caused by build system of your OS, which should use
$(MAKE) instead of make (or something else).

I suggest you to use the default build system provided by evilvte:
1. go to directory of evilvte
2. make clean ; make

evilvte only need the binary itself, so you may copy the newly built
evilvte to $PATH.

My most sincere apologies, this seems to be a problem with all vte based terms (or, at least sakura, termit and evilvte) under ratpoison x86_64. So, I think I will have io take this up with the libvte guys and or the ratpioson devs. Either way, thanks for making such a great term, and I hope you keep on developing it. Hey,
I've fixed another bug with WINDOW_TITLE_DYNAMIC. When switching tabs the window title wasn't getting updated in switch_page(). That function wasn't updating current_tab and term globals. It was just setting the title to the old tab's title. I've also been experiencing occasional core dumps when closing tabs, and I think it might be this causing them.
I've attached a patch of all my work (including the MATCH_STRING_EXEC stuff). I hope that's ok.

It is the feature of libvte.
There is no convenient way to fix it.

Hey. I believe I have the fix for this. I've also fixed another bug I discovered. First the other bug:
URIs with "&" in them get cut off just before the "&". Modified the system() string to enclose the URI in single quotes and it works. Patch attached.
For the original bug, looks like the return of menu_popup() just needs to be tweaked. If VTE reports no matched URI on a button press, return FALSE (instead of TRUE). You'll see this in my patch.
My patch also changes the URI click button to 2 (middle click). This is a better idea IMHO, and it's how at least one other VTE based term does things.

What about giving us the option of customizing each of those 16 colors? Not to cause total psychadelic confusion (ok, that's actually an option for those so inclined), but to finetune certain ANSI colors so you better can distinguish them in certain combinations of background/forground color.
[I'm one of those who compile a customized instance of evilvte for each and every host I'm going to connect to, each with it's own combination of background, foreground and cursor colors... and a matching custom icon too. I'll probably never switch back to gnome-terminal again... ;-)]

Voila! The custom color scheme is implemented without touching anything else than the config.h file! Two things worth pointing out:
The COLOR_STYLE option must be set to something unique (in my case: USERCOLOR), and then there must be an option defined with that specific name and it must be defined with the C variable holding the palette (in my case, the option will be named USERCOLOR and the palette is called color_usercolor). Finally, the actual palette structure must be included.
Second thing to remark: my intent with this specific palette is to ensure that all colors are at least different from foreground, background and color. This means that black color is not fully black (so if you print default foreground color over a "black" background, you will actually be able to faintly see the written text) and that explicitly white text is not fully white (meaning that white text will be distinguishable as a very pale grey text against the white). Finally, bright red is made a bit darker than the cursor.
It is possible to add a commented out version of the above structure to the config.h file that comes with evilvte. Sure, it is perhaps not the most user friendly configuration text to edit (and it is inconsistent with the way to specify options for background, foreground etc) but it will provide a crude hint for powerusers how to tweak the palette. Perhaps an explicit note in that commented out block of code should be included that states that this solution in the future will be replaced with something more human friendly.
"More human friendly" means that a user sets "COLOR_STYLE" to XTERM and then only specifies the few colors he/she wants to alter by specifying COLOR_0 #191919 to change black to 'nearly black' and specifying COLOR_11 #ff9900 to make bright yellow actually look orange and then not worry about specifying any more colors. Well, ideas, ideas, ideas...

Great news that you will create a more end-user-friendly configuration solution (even if I'm quite pleased with the absurd power hacking the config.h file gives you)
For such a config solution (which I assume will be some config file which is read by the evilvte executable at runtime), please add support early on using one single executable to use multiple profiles. One (very) simple way to accomplish that is to have a flag
--config-file=particular_config.cfg
which controls where to get the run time configuration.
That way, I can have one config file per connection I have. So for one host, I get one specific set of colors and icons... for another host... oh, I'm repeating myself, I've already told this story so many times already.
PS. Regarding color schemes... I'm enjoying in one of my connections a color scheme where I've adjusted any "colliding" colors so they actually can be told apart. So, even if I use yellow as the foreground color for that specific connection, the explicit yellow color is made slightly orange, making it possible to see what text is "default" and what text is intentionally yellow. Same for any explicit black color vs the defaul black BG of the terminal, by making the explicit black color actually dark grey I can tell any black text apart from the black background!
Simply put, evilvte is WIN!

Thanks for the new release.
In the file evilvte-0.4.5/src/sakura.c, is it possible to have the line 2786 which looks like

    gtk_window_set_icon_from_file(GTK_WINDOW(main_window), ICON_DIR"/evilvte.png", NULL);

replaced by the line

gtk_window_set_icon_from_file(GTK_WINDOW(main_window), ICON_DIR"/"ICON_IMAGE, NULL);

?

That way, the good old config.h parameter "#define ICON_IMAGE" that existed in evilvte-0.4.4.2 will be resurrected!
(And yes, this change also means that ICON_IMAGE must be defined to the defaul value "evilvte.png" at some sensible place in the source).
I'm an addict to having custom icons, so the icon reflects the color scheme of the terminal window (and for each possible host I work with, I use a unique color scheme for background, foreground and cursor color).
If for nothing else, please try to keep this ability to customize (in the config.h file) the window icon to ensure that evilvte continues to be outstanding in the respect of being the ONLY terminal application out there (that I am aware of) which supports BOTH setting separate foreground/background/cursor colors AND specifying a custom window icon!

I just added a new option PROGRAM_ICON (not released yet).
My design was to read $HOME/somewhere/foo.bar, like the BACKGROUND_IMAGE option.
Thus, different users may have different icons without rebuild.
And...I believe I never put ICON_IMAGE options in all public evilvte tarballs.
I guess you are using a customized 0.4.4.2? :-)

Well, I used a unmodified 0.4.4.2, actually, and that one contained that ICON_IMAGE option. Hence my dependance ;-).
Other than modifying (wildly) the config.h file in the 0.4.4.2 release, I did not touch any other files.
If you implement another scheme for selecting/customizing the program icon for evilvte, I suppose that is fine, as long as it does not too strongly expect one user to only use one single program ICON (I use about 20 and counting different icons for evilvte on my work machine).

On another subject: I saw that title changing were implemented, or at least, it appears to be for tab titles according to the source. Personally, being an old fart damaged from using too much xterm in my days, I configure evilvte to not use the tabs at all. As a end result, my evilvte does never display any changed titles and in my case, the desirable feature would be that the title changes were propagated to the window title directly.
What is the best way to configure this? A very straightforward solution is to add yet another option: "TITLE_LABEL_DYNAMIC"
By setting that, any changes title changes are propagated to the window title. If set simultaneously as "TAB_LABEL_DYNAMIC" , well, then both the tab title and the window title will be updated with the new title.
Implementing this option would require quite few lines: there is already a piece of code for setting the window title (used to support the functionality of a static window title), a single oneliner if I understood the code correctly. Then in the function do_title_changed, some clever #ifdefs can be used to add that oneliner at a good place (and make the two options TAB_LABEL_DYNAMIC and TITLE_LABLE_DYNAMIC coexist peacifully).
Of course, I might have overlooked some pieces of code elsewhere in sakura.c which is related with title management and with it's associated preprocessor variables. But I think I will give this a stab, and see if I can make it work for me. The main risk as I see it is that I manage to create something that works for me, but which breaks stuff for those who relies on tabs (but I'll do my best to avoid that).

It is really a small patch, basically changing ca 3 lines and adding another ca 4 lines.

Sure, it is brute force to (recompile) one binary (or entire install) for every server I want to connect to, but what doesn't one do to ensure that every server has it's own combination of foreground, background and cursor color, as well as an icon with matching colors (to make it far easier to alt-tab to the right terminal session).
Currently, evilvte seem to be the ONLY option if I want the above. gnome-terminal has had custom cursor color about to happen for a few years but it still has not shown up and to make things worse, they decided to remove the feature of custom icon images... grrr.
I have really tried to find some terminal which allows BOTH custom cursor color AND custom user provided icons (on a per server profile basis) but NO terminal provides it. Sure, rxvt claims to support custom icons but it refuses to run whenever I tries to activate that command line flag...
I think I can live with a window that refuses to shrink horizontally (but I will be happy the day it is available though) and I have to admit gnome terminal had ONE very useful feature I miss with evilvte: dynamic resizing of the font! If that could be added I would REALLY appreciate it!

However there is one thing I miss - but as I cannot name it in one word I'll try to explain it in this post:
I use bash completion and when I write
mount
in gnome-terminal I get list of possible mount locations from fstab (/mnt/cdrom, /boot etc.) <- it's bash-completion
unfortunately in evilvte when I write
mount
I get regular bash prompt: Display all xxx possibilities? (y or n).
So it looks like bash completion doesn't work, but when I write
su -login
mount
then bash-completion starts to work :)
It looks like su -login puts evilvte into some kind of "login mode" and I just wanted to ask if it's possible for evilvte to start initially in this 'login mode' ?

Thank you for evilvte, it's a very good and pretty fast terminal emulator, I've mode to it from Konsole.
Writing this because I've found a bug in it.
Config: tabs, close dialog, close safely.
The problem: while > 1 tab is opened clicking close and cancel in dialog main window disappears.
Solution:
delete_event must return gboolean, TRUE - do not destroy the window, FALSE - do destroy.
P.S. Configuration dialog & rc file would be very nice ;)

I can not reproduce the bug on 0.4.5~pre4. :-(
When I found the bug, I noticed that it only occur on 32 bit environment.
I wrote CLOSE_DIALOG option under 64 bit environment, and it never encountered problems.
My daily use evilvte does not enable CLOSE_DIALOG, so I did not notice the problem until 0.4.5~pre2.
Timeline:
I started evilvte project under 64 bit environment -> support CLOSE_DIALOG -> ...(a long duration here)... -> I changed my daily use system to 32 bit environment -> ...(a long duration here)... -> I noticed the window-disappearing problem, which only occur on 32 bit environment -> I fixed it with a simple work around, and released 0.4.5~pre2.
Could you paste your patches here?
Or, could you provide the detailed procedure to reproduce the bug?

On current testing debian (lenny) the evilvtw can be resized verticall, but horizonally it may only be made larger, never smaller.

I removed the "resize" code on purpose.It is easy to add it if evilvte only use a single layout.

However, evilvte supports several different layout in build-time.
It is very hard to support every possible layout with simple code.
And each layout with resize code needs a lot of testing in different window managers.
I plan to support "resize" in 0.5.0 branch of evilvte, but it will not be in Debian Lenny.
Lenny was planed to freeze in mid-July. It is impossible to make evilvte 0.5 into Lenny.

Some specific window manager can toggle evilvte between 2 different size.
For example, evilvte in evilwm can be switching between "normal size" and "maximum size" without problem.

Hello i would like to have an option to use NeXT,rxvt scrollbar styles
and a tabbar like mrxvt (Screen Shot)
I don't know if anyone other than me would be interested of this but ill give it a try by posting this.

Hi, I am not sure what is the feature you want.
1. tabbar at bottom of window? -> #define TABBAR_PLACE BOTTOM in evilvte
2. scrollbar? I do not see any scrollbar in the image.
3. running program / command in tab label? -> Try lilyterm. The feature is in the TODO list of evilvte.
4. transparent tabbar? -> I think it should be provided by window manager or composite manager.
4. (As far as I know, not all GTK+ theme / engine support true transparency.)
5. 256 colors? Blinking cursor? VTE / evilvte has supported them.

2) The screenshot i posted were just a suggestion if we could have a similair tabstyle, i know it maybe was not the best screenshot because of the tabbar's position. But just ignore the position and focus on the style of the tabs.

Ah, I see.
VTE depends on GTK+, so it is naturally that VTE-based terminal emulators use GTK+ as the default toolkit.
I have no idea if GTK+ can let its scrollbar behave like a rxvt one.
I have no plan to support other GUI interface other than GTK+.

I know some GTK+ themes / engines may mimic the style, but I personal do not use GTK+ themes / engines. :-P

Hi.
I'm using mrxvt for more than one year. It's great terminal emulator, but has problem with xft font encoding. Today I've found evilvte. Small, quite fast [but starts a bit longer than mrxvt] and with great feature - encoding change. Tried to switch to evilvte, but couldn't - few options are missing, and I've decided to stay with mrxvt.
So I've thought, I'll write down those few ideas, which might help improving evil and maybe some day it will be the best small emulator available.
1. Fullscreen toggle [menu] and fullscreen shortucut - terminal on whole screen, above panels.
2. As option: transparent tabs, matching terminal background - like mrxvt.
3. As option: Defining RGB values for each font color, for example when I have blue background [colors 4 and 12], I want to change a bit shade of blue to make it more visible.
4. As option: Off-focus fading - a bit darker fonts & background when terminal is out of focus.
5. As option: Close buttons on each tab.

I hope this will help make evilvte better. Keep up the good work :)

Yes, it is. Looks like above. Also please notice two things:
1. Dashed lines around title, to notice user about new output in third tab.
2. Dynamic tab title, chaning accoring to running application, differect working directory, etc.

It is hard to use "dashed lines" in GTK+. I think a color change in tab label is good. (already in my TODO list)

You may want to try lilyterm, which has supportted this feature.

Thanks for the link, but lily doesn't support fake transparency [background image]. And for me that's major functionality.

After so many pre-releases, I found that not all GTK+ theme / engine supports alpha channel.
I think it is much easier to set transparent via a window manager / composite manager.
I will not support transparent tabbar in 0.4.4. :-(
